HOLE 1
A slight dogleg to the right, golf course architects, Pete and P.B. Dye, quickly introduce you to the beauty and challenge of this course on the very first hole. On the left, a thin ribbon of water runs in front of the trees while the right is flanked by a series of mounds and hillocks reminiscent of Scotland’s rolling courses. Knock your drive straight up the middle, avoiding the mounds, for a faded shot will leave you with a blind approach to the green. The elevated green is receptive to a well-placed iron shot. A yawning depression to the green’s left will scoop up any misdirected ball and seriously test your wedge game.

This straightaway par four is one of the better birdie opportunities that the Dyes provide you. Favor the left center of the fairway to avoid water that runs the entire length of the right side. The approach is slightly downhill to a receptive green, ringed by beautiful oaks, and guarded by a large bunker on the right.

A dogleg right, this hole requires a straight drive through the trees while avoiding a large bunker in the right side of the landing area. An enormous bunker down the left side awaits the last 75 yards of your approach to the hole. Other bunkers, mounds, and hillocks lurk to the right of the green eager to test your skill.

The par three 4th resembles Pete Dye’s famous 17th at TPC Sawgrass, for beauty and challenge. Standing on the tee, you will see nothing between you and the green but a sparkling lake. Huge mounds with pot bunkers lie in wait behind the green and a trap on the left will gobble up the errant draw. Don’t be short!

HOLE 5
Situated atop a knoll, the 5th tee offers a bird’s eye view of the fairway, lake, and green. You must hit your drive into a fairly narrow landing area flanked on both sides by oaks and pines and a series of pot bunkers in the rough on the left side. The second shot requires precision, for the green is bulk-headed against a lake to the right which must be crossed to find the green. Play it too safe to the left and you may find one of the three bunkers that surround the green.

HOLE 6
The longest hole at DeBordieu, this double dogleg snakes to the right and winds to the left. Off the tee there is waste bunker to carry and a pond to the left. After your drive, favor the right center of the fairway as playing it too close will certainly find the large waste bunker down the left side. A narrow but longish green should now be in sight. A lake begins where the waste area ends and winds around the back of the green. Hit the green, as missing to the right will still require a tricky chip.

Number seven, a slightly uphill, dogleg right offers plenty of room off of the tee. However, miss left or right and you are likely to find waste bunkers down either side of the fairway. As you approach the green be careful not to become distracted. The beauty of the white sand bunkers with majestic live oaks, will often lure a slightly mis-struck shot to the green.

HOLE 8
The 8th hole is signature Pete Dye. A long, challenging par 3, the hole curves left along a pond to a large and undulating green. The formidable bulkhead running along the left side of the green reminds the fearful golfer to miss right. For the right side is a safe bail out area with soft mounding and a large bunker. Bogey is an acceptable score on the eighth hole.

The front nine finishes with a beautiful par 5. Hit your tee shot to the top of the hill while avoiding the lake to your left. As the 9th hole rolls along, large waste bunkers come into view down the left side. The green is well protected by mounds and sharply edged bunkers, all remindful of features on the links in Scotland. Players will have a good opportunity to make birdie on this hole with a lay up to a short pitch or a skillfully played 2nd that finds the green.

A fairly straight-away par four, after avoiding the lake to the left a generous fairway is obscured by a carefully crafted opening between two fairway bunkers. Live oaks guard the right side of your approach to a small two-tiered green. The green is surrounded by fall off areas and bunkers.

Another scoring opportunity, this par 5 is a slight dog leg right lined by pretty live oaks. When laying up for your third, be precise as the last 100 yards feature a long waste bunker to the left and an oak that crowds the fairway on your right. The tiny green is reachable in two, and the surround is heavily bunkered on the left and right.

HOLE 12
This is one of Pete Dye’s favorite holes. A short par four, driver is not a necessity off the tee. If your tee shot drifts too far left a large mound may block your view of the green. However, a well placed tee shot in the middle to right side of the fairway will leave you a short iron for your approach. Be careful, as the back of the green falls off into a pond if you are long and left!

A slight draw will be rewarded with a shorter approach on this sharp dogleg left hole. However, if you are too far left, a waste area may keep you sidelined by unforgiving trees and waste area that run the entire length of the hole. The green is large but don’t be fooled by the false front that can so easily spoil a good looking shot.

Beautiful, the par three 14th has teeth. From the center of the green and to your left there is a large pond followed by a live oak that hangs over the front of the green. Take enough club, as the steep bank in front of the green is rarely forgiving. The green is small and a bunker will catch balls that run through the green. In early April, the enormous azaleas behind the green remind you of another very special place.

One of the prettiest holes on the golf course, the 15th is dogleg right hole. Squeeze your drive between the two large bunkers on your left and live oaks that jut out on your right. After rounding the corner, you will find the green is well guarded by a giant bunker on the right. A challenging green, it’s shape is like a rooftop from front to back, with the green’s center being the top of the pitch.

The least threatening of the par 3’s at DeBordieu, the 16th still screams Dye. A deep pot bunker catches balls that are mis-struck or clip the tree short right of the green. Bunkers also line the entire left side of the green. Carrying a fairly narrow opening with a large false front is the key, and long right will leave you a fairly easy chip.

The first of two incredible finishing holes, the par four 17th doglegs to the right along Teal and La Bruce pond. Be careful not to try and carry too much of the dogleg across the water. For often the prevailing wind will stall your effort. The lone oak tree in the middle of the fairway is a sensible target for your tee shot. The approach is equally intimidating with waste bunker short right and a green that sits in the water. Favor the left side where even a miss will afford you the opportunity to salvage par.

HOLE 18
The finishing hole at DeBordieu is a spectacular mix of beauty and strategy. The tee shot is demanding as you cross water that runs the length of the hole’s right side. For safety favor the large mounds on your left. Depending upon where your drive lands the second can be equally difficult as the landing area for your third is sandwiched between a large waste bunker to your left and the pond to your right. So far so good - the huge green is also situated between the pond on the right and a cluster of bunkers on your left. Dye is clearly stamped on the 18th hole as he provides an extraordinary finish to a championship worthy golf course.
