History of DeBordieu
A Timeless Coastal Haven
Nestled along the stunning South Carolina coastline, DeBordieu Colony stands as one of the oldest and most beautiful beachside communities on the East Coast. Spanning 2,700 acres of ancient oaks and pines, six-and-a-half miles of pristine beaches, and untouched tidal marshes, DeBordieu offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history.
A Storied Beginning
The legend of DeBordieu traces back to 1777 when the Marquis de Lafayette, struck by the unparalleled beauty of the land, purportedly exclaimed, "This land is so beautiful, it must be the borderland of God!" In French, "D’aborde Dieu," which over time evolved into the local pronunciation "Debidue." Before the Civil War, the area was home to prosperous rice plantations. The affluent owners of these plantations built a colony of homes here, making it their summer retreat. Though the Civil War brought an end to this era, the late 19th century saw wealthy businessmen from the north drawn to DeBordieu’s allure, purchasing property for winter homes and hunting retreats.
Preservation and Prosperity
The land, once owned by “Bromo-Seltzer King” Dr. Isaac Emerson and later the Vanderbilt family, has changed hands over the years, but its future as a coastal hideaway remains secure. At least 600 acres have been designated as a nature preserve, and an additional 17,000 acres of undeveloped land borders DeBordieu to the south, ensuring its natural beauty is preserved for future generations.
A Community Rich in Amenities
Conveniently located three miles north of Georgetown and six miles south of Pawleys Island, DeBordieu offers a perfect harmony of tranquility and vibrant community life. The DeBordieu Golf Club’s 30,000-square-foot, Georgian-style clubhouse provides stunning views of a challenging, 7,032-yard course designed by Pete and P.B. Dye. The Beach Club, with a pool overlooking the ocean, offers superb dining and live musical entertainment. The DeBordieu Tennis Center features eight Har-tru Courts (4 under lights), 4 pickleball courts, 1 hard court, and a pro shop. Throughout the year, family activities such as oyster roasts, dinner dances, and barbecues are hosted, fostering a strong sense of community.
